A senior high school student, Joseph Envidiado, 21, died in a fraternity hazing last Sunday in Zamboanga City.
Twelve of 18 officers and member of Tau Gamma Phi Triskelion-San Jose Gusu Chapter were arrested after reports of their involvement in the initiation rites, said Maj. Elmer Solon, city police Station 11 chief.
A probe revealed that the incident occurred around 10 a.m. at the residence of a Fidel Cubol, an arrested member. Barangay officials in the village where Cubol lived said that they were unaware that a hazing was being conducted in their area.
According to the police, Envidiado was one of six recruits who underwent hazing. Two frat members, Marcelino Viñas Jr. and Joseph Villarosas, hastened to bring the victim to the Zamboanga City Medical Center but he was declared dead on arrival.
Viñas was reportedly master initiator of rites. Seized also at the scene was a paddle wrapped in a sack.
Among the others apprehended were the reported head of fraternity, Ruben Sebastian; deputy Roldan Paler; and members Eryan Alabata, Cleven Atis, John Dale Bulalacad, Azis Camlian and Xavierwyn Sebastian.
Police said that charges of violation of the anti-hazing law would be filed against the suspects as well as six other frat members who have yet to be arrested.
