On the 7th anniversary of supertyphoon ‘Yolanda’ (international name, ‘Haiyan’), which ravaged the Visayas, the government gave nearly 2,500 free houses in Estancia, Iloilo province.
Local and national officials attended virtual turnover ceremony for the Estancia Residences, Estancia Villas and Estancia People’s Village homes under the Yolanda Permanent Housing Project (YPHP) in Western Visayas.
Cabinet secretary Karlo Nograles credited the National Housing Authority for their cooperation in finishing the project on time, despite challenges posed by the pandemic. Also the head of Task Force Yolanda, he assured the public that they were working on making resettlement sites livable, noting that livelihood and education were key factors in that goal.
He added that they had also reached out to the education department to include these resettlement areas in the Last Mile Schools Program, which seeks to give educational access to conflict-hit places.
In November 2013, ‘Yolanda’ hit land in the town of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, killing over 6,300 and racking up P95 billion in damages.
