Grandmaster Wesley So last week won his second straight US Chess Championship crown, and with it the $50,000 top prize money (PhP2.5 million).
According to reports, So ended up tied at 6.5 points with fellow GMs Fabiano Caruana and Sam Sevian after 11 rounds of the 2021 tournament at the St. Louis Chess Club, which necessitated a playoff which he clinched.
Caruana (the world No. 2) and Sevian went home with $30,000 each.
So, who is a Cavite native, migrated to the US several years ago to further his international chess career, due to lack of support from Philippine chess officials.
