Visa, Mastercard cut ties with Pornhub

Republika

Credit card behemoths Visa and Mastercard declared that they were halting payments to the adult website Pornhub, after a New York Times columnist reported that child sex abuse and rape were portrayed on the platform.

Visa was still conducting investigations into the allegations, while Mastercard said that their inquiry into the report “confirmed violations of our standards on unlawful content.” Both, however, have already suspended use of their cards on the site.

The New York Times report said that there were “many” videos showing “child abuse and nonconsensual violence” and that users of the platform could, time and again, repost violent or abusive images since they are also allowed to directly download videos.

In response, Pornhub said that it would permit only “properly identified users” to post content and also prohibited video downloads.

They added that only content partners and those who earn revenue from ads on their videos can upload to the site. A new verification process was also to be introduced next year.

“This news is crushing for the hundreds of thousands of models who rely on our platform for their livelihoods,” said Pornhub.
