Vaccine billionaire

THE WAY I SEE IT | Susan Amoroso

Did you know that the new billionaires this year got their billions through the manufacture of the covid vaccines? This interesting piece of covid-related information was divulged by no less than World Health Organization chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Did you know that millions of Hong Kongers have refused to be vaccinated despite the availability of these vaccines in their country? While many countries are hard put to get their covid vaccine supply, the vaccines in Hong Kong are now nearing their expiry date because there are not enough takers. The Hong Kong government is now hard put what to do with the expiring vaccines.

On a lighter note, let me tell you about my friend Cristin Laurie Sotto. She may not become a vaccine billionaire but she has certainly helped a lot of displaced OFWs since the pandemic.

Her team sells green papaya atchara with loads of raisins, carrots and other herbs and spices made by former overseas Filipino workers (OFW). They also sell special vinegars, fresh fish and other seafood harvested in fishponds from nearby provinces. The producers and sellers are mostly displaced OFWs. They go around Makati in their mobile carts.

The Filipino bayanihan spirit will be alive and well as we all cruise in this pandemic. I am just disheartened when I hear of vaccinees experiencing adverse reactions from taking the covid vaccines.

Just this morning as I was writing this column a female TV broadcaster was interviewed in her hospital bed as she narrates her adverse reaction to the vaccine. She developed urticaria (pamamantal) in some parts of her body and swelling of her lips less than a day after her vaccine jab. She has a history of controlled hypertension and allergy.

There are reports of deaths and severe adverse reactions days or hours after taking the covid vaccines. Deaths.

Maybe that is one of the reasons why the government has earmarked P100 million to study the effects of the vaccines on the Filipinos.

I cannot understand why the government plans to vaccinate 70 percent of the 110 million population in the country to develop herd immunity. Will the vaccine of whatever make or brand really protect us from getting sick of covid? Will it prevent covid deaths?

Many of my relatives and friends have taken the covid vaccine jabs both here and abroad. Thank God not one has reported any severe adverse reactions. As I do not plan to be inoculated, I am just praying that those who did most, especially my loved ones, will not experience negative effects in the future.

A number of virologists, scientists and medical doctors say these vaccines are still in the experimental stage. It is noteworthy to say that one of the primary reasons why these vaccines were issued the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) is because the World Health Organization and our own Department of Health has not certified any one drug that cures and prevents Covid-19. I wonder if that is the reason why not one drug was certified as a covid treatment. The ivermectin touted by a big number of medical doctors and scientists that it cures, acts as a prophylaxis and prevents hospitalization against covid was not given the certification.
