The United States government is reportedly “strongly advising” its citizens against travel to the Philippines due to the existing dismal Covid19 situation.
The US State Department had issued the Level 4 Do Not Travel restriction in line with the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), noting that the Philippines is the worst in the ASEAN region in terms of active Covid cases (150,000+).
Level 4 is the highest of their travel advisories.
“Because of the current situation in the Philippines, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk of getting and spreading Covid19 variants,” the CDC said.
US officials said if travel to the Philippines cannot be avoided, people should make sure they have completed their vaccine shots, wear a mask, practice social distancing and observe minimum health protocols.
So far, the Philippines has recorded 953,196 Covid19 cases and is on track to hit the one-million mark within one week, at the rate things are going.
Also cited as reasons for the Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory are civil unrest, kidnaping and terrorism threats in southern Philippines, specifically Marawi City and Sulu.
