Citing Covid19 concerns, the board of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) – which has eight member schools – cancelled its entire Season 83.
“After discussions, the UAAP board of trustees came to this difficult decision, putting major consideration on the health and safety of the student athletes and those involved in the operations of our competitions,” an official statement said.
This is only the second time the UAAP has opted to forego its entire sports season, since Season 8 in 1945-1946 during World War 2.
The UAAP cut short its Season 82 earlier this year due to the pandemic, abruptly ending the ladies volleyball tournament that is the most glamorous event of the second semester, and its main crowd-drawer.
The UAAP is composed of Ateneo de Manila, National University, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, Far Eastern University, Adamson University and University of the East.
