Travelers from India banned until May 14 due to Covid19

The Philippines is temporarily shutting out all travelers from India until May 14 over a tremendous spike in Covid cases that their government is struggling to contain, amid the discovery of highly transmissible variants.

The ban comes after the compelling recommendation of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) which cited the cataclysmal health situation prevailing in the second most-populous country in the world.

Exempted are those passengers already in transit, or who were already in India within 14 days preceding arrival in Manila.

But upon setting foot in the Philippines, they will be required to undergo a stringent supervised 14-day quarantine regimen.

Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) had been dispatched to help India tackle surging new Covid cases that are overwhelming its health care system.

“The exponential growth that has been seen is truly astonishing,” according to Maria van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on Covid19.

Recent figures culled from the BBC news network showed India (pop. 1.3 billion) with some 17 million infections and over to 200,000 deaths.

On Monday, April 26, the Philippines breached the one million mark in confirmed Covid19 infections, the second-most in the ASEAN region after Indonesia.
