Taiwan must surely know something about Covid19 that most countries in the world don’t. Because, believe it or not, there hasn’t been recorded a single locally-transmitted coronavirus case in 200 days.
Due to the sterling efforts of the Taiwan government, this island nation of 23 million people has the best track record in containing the virus.
On the other hand, the United States, which prides itself as the most advanced and most powerful country in the world, has the worst with over 9.2 million cases and 235,177 deaths (as of Friday, Oct. 30, 2020).
Since the pandemic outbreak earlier this year, Taiwan has had only 550 confirmed cases with only seven deaths.
Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) said Taiwan managed to do this by closing their borders early on and tightly screening foreign arrivals. And apart from these, universal mask-wearing, rigorous contract tracing and ultra-strict quarantine procedures.
They said Taiwan is the only major country to have eliminated community transmission of the Covid virus, for now the best globally. This is all the more impressive as many people live close together in apartments in urban centers like Taipei and Kaohsiung.
But, Time magazine said Taiwan can’t afford to sit on its laurels because there have been 20 cases reported during the past two weeks, coming from Covid-rich ASEAN countries like the Philippines and Indonesia.
