Swedish study links antibiotics to bowel cancer

Republika

Swedish educational institution Umea University recently came out with a body of research suggesting a connection between consumption of antibiotics and the development of tumors. Particularly, researchers claim that antibiotics increased the risk of bowel cancer.

According to cancer researcher Sophia Harlid, their findings place emphasis on “the fact that there are many reasons to be restrictive with antibiotics.”

“While in many cases antibiotic therapy is necessary and saves lives, in the event of less serious ailments that can be expected to heal anyway, caution should be exercised,” she said.

“There is absolutely no cause for alarm simply because you have taken antibiotics,” she added. “The increase in risk is moderate and the efffect on the absolute risk to the individual is fairly small.”

Their study was based on data from 40,000 patients on the Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry between the period of 2010 to 2016.
