Super-spreader event possible, UP research team

Republika

The University of the Philippines’ OCTA research team were against the reduced distance between commuters—a move recently suspended by government—citing that it may spark a “super spreader event.”

Medical experts and doctors’ group had strongly urged the public to keep to the 1-meter distance between persons while the proposal was under review.
The Philippine College of Physicians previously called the government’s attention, voicing their concern over the relaxed measure, saying that new cases may rise north of 600 per day.

Health secretary Francisco Duque III had said: “[When multiplied] by 30 days, you will have about 20,850 new cases.” He added that multiplied by a fatality rate of 1.6, it would yield close to 4,000 deaths per year.
