A nice warm weather at noon with the temperature slowly going down as the day wears down. This weather makes you want to go to the beach or to the river to soak it up.
But we cannot do it now because of the nasty pandemic. We are going back to the era where we cannot even do a make believe even in our own backyard. Well you can have a swimming pool in your own backyard and you can swim all morning or all afternoon.
But those are only for people with money. How about people like us who do not have the means to do these things at home? Well, we just have to suffer it out anyway the pandemic will surely go away.
When I was young, we had this annual trip to the river which we jokingly referred to as ‘karayan’ beach, meaning river beach. It’s about time we harvested what we would call ‘rama’. It is a cubicle a-shaped structure built as a home for all kinds of fishes or river creatures. On top you will see some branches of trees to put some kind of sign or marker that it is yours so that when harvest time comes nobody would claim it otherwise.
Harvesting is done usually by three or four people with a circular fish net being cast around the ‘rama’ and held firmly by them. The leader, usually a fisherman, goes inside the net and throws away all the rocks inside. When the rocks are all gone you can harvest the kind of fish that you want but what we love so dearly are what we refer to as the jumping salad. These are small shrimps that do nothing except jump up and down.
Well with all the food that we could carry it was a real fiesta for us.
