The Philippine Senate last week approved a bill changing the name of Roosevelt Avenue in Quezon City to “Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue.”
Senator Grace Poe, who is the daughter of the late movie icon, abstained from the voting out of delicadeza.
The bill originally sought to rename Del Monte Avenue after FPJ, but this was scotched due to immense public outcry, including the Catholic Church.
Fortunately, Senate President Tito Sotto came up with a compromise arrangement which hastened the passage of SB No. 7499, to the satisfaction of all concerned.
Roosevelt Avenue was named in honor of Republican President Theodore Roosevelt Jr. who was the occupant of the White House (1901-1909) at the onset of the American colonial era.
