Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has scuttled all her plans to seek the presidency in the May 9, 2022 national elections.
Ms. Carpio said she had decided to abandon her bid for the country’s top elective post after her father, President Duterte, accepted the nomination of the ruling PDP-Laban party as their vice presidential candidate.
“Yes, I am not running for a national position as we both agreed only one of us will run for a national position in 2022,” she was quoted as saying.
Mr. Duterte accepted the PDP-Laban’s endorsement during a convention last week in San Fernando, Pampanga.
Sen. Bong Go, President Duterte’s longtime aide, was also chosen as the party’s presidential standard bearer, but once again he declined their offer.
While Ms. Carpio obviously conceded to her father’s wishes, she said her homegrown regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago would not be supporting the PDP-Laban’s national campaign effort like in 2019.
”No, I will not share my light this time,” she said.
Deputy Speaker Bernadette Herrera of the Hugpong Para Kay Sara said they haven’t given up hope and would continue to convince Ms. Carpio to run for president.
