Roosevelt Avenue renamed to honor ‘Da King’

Republika

President Rodrigo Duterte signed a law last month that renamed Roosevelt Avenue in Quezon City after the late National Artist for Film and renowned actor Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ).

Back in September of 2021, it was approved on the third-and final-reading of the bill by the Senate. Twenty-two voted in the affirmative, one abstained and there were no negative votes. It was only a matter of weeks before the House of Representatives passed their own version.

The bill originally sought to rename Quezon City’s Del Monte Avenue after FPJ. A friend of the Poe family, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto, stepped in to amend the measure in order for Roosevelt Avenue to be renamed instead.

The necessary circulars and rules will be issued by the Department of the Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the implementation of provisions in Republic Act 11608.

Sen. Grace Poe, one of the late FPJ’s daughters, stated that his ancestral home is located along Roosevelt Avenue. It is where he spent much of his childhood, she explained.

In a statement, she said that the action was a means for people to remember her father’s legacy:

“My family and I are grateful and humbled by this legislation,” it read in part. ”FPJ Avenue gives my father’s works and legacy a sense of place in our nation’s history.”

Susan Roces, FPJ’s widow, issued a statement of her own. In Tagalog, she expressed gratitude for the recognition and importance given to her late husband through the naming of FPJ Avenue.
