Pope Francis recently promoted Archbishop Jose Advincula of Roxas City, Capiz to the rank of cardinal along with 12 others from other countries.
The ceremony was held at the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome but unfortunately Advincula failed to attend due to the coronavirus pandemic and only watched from his home the livestreamed “red hat ceremony”.
There were others too who were not able to participate in the ceremony, like Cardinal Cornelius Sim of Brunei.
Pope Francis in his homily counseled the 13 new cardinals not to abuse their titles by using them for personal gain and corruption.
“Let’s think of so many types of corruption in the life of the priesthood,” Francis said. “If you think of yourselves so grandly, you won’t be pastors close to the people, you’ll just be ‘Eminence.’ And if you feel this way, you’ll have strayed off the road.”
The seventh of Francis’ pontificate is again reflected in the Argentine pope’s effort to name cardinals from places that have never had them before or whose service to the church he wants to highlight.
