Police appear to have solved the New Year’s Eve kidnapping of Ateneo college student James Elijah Yap.
Operatives of the Philippine National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG), as reported in SunStar Philippines, arrested two alleged masterminds in the abduction of the 21-year-old Yap.
Maj. Ronaldo Lumactod, AKG spokesman, said Yap was taken at gunpoint by six persons in Barangay Mariana, New Manila, Quezon City sometime in the afternoon of December 31.
He was released by the kidnappers in Ermita, Manila on January 5, 2021, after relatives paid a P1.5-million ransom.
The initial demand was supposedly P200 million, but the family protested they did not have that kind of money lying around.
One of those arrested, however, vehemently denied any involvement in the crime. But she pointed to her husband as a possible participant as he had borrowed her car, which was used as a getaway vehicle, earlier that day.
Lumactod said kidnap-for-ransom charges have been filed against the two suspects.
