South and South East Asia Innovation Award 2020 recognizes University Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Cebu Technological University (academic institution category) as among Most Influential Innovators, according to Clarivate Plc.
Clarivate, global leader in giving trusted information and insights to accelerate innovation, hosted Innovation Forum sharing best practices and transformational innovations.
“This was based on our invention/patent volume, patent success (granted), patent influence (citation) and globalization,” says UBD Faculty of Science’s Dr. Jose Hernandez Santos, Chartered Chemist and Chartered Scientist.
“The award is due to the large number of patents UBD has filed in re-cent years, mainly filed by engineers with innovation goals.
“One contributor is Dr. Reinero Virrey, in the United Kingdom doing post doctoral work. He did a lot of innovative work while studying for his PHD. at UBD, and he is a Filipino.”
UBD has 60 patents filed, 39 patents granted.38 US patents filed and 32 US patents granted.
Dr. Santos says while he isn’t an innovation contributor, his research outputs are 52 publications and 26 attendances as primary paper presenter in Asia and Europe conferences.
For Dr. Santos, Google Scholar lists 752 citations in 69 publications. 36 articles with citation data have 20 citations per article. Scopus, the largest abstract and citation data base of peer reviewed literature, lists 541 citations in 35 publications; 35 articles have citation data; average 15 citations per article.

Dr. Mark I. R. Petalcorin, Protein Scientist/Molecular Biologist/Biochemist, teaches Biochemistry. He’s University of Philippines Brunei Circle president.
French-speaking Dr. Romeo Paducan, Associate Professor in Energy and Climate Change Policy and Management, teaches Energy Policy. He was Interim CEO of policy think tank Brunei National Energy Research Institute.
His research includes energy/power sector planning, policy and regulation, sustainable energies, climate change, energy cooperation and market integration.
Dr. Rommel A. Curaming teaches History. He has published scholarly articles and book reviews in international journals. Rutledge published in 2020 his Power and Knowledge in Southeast Asia: State and Scholars in Indonesia and the Philippines.
In 2009, UBD introduced GenNEXT programme, a broadside and transdisciplinary framework. It provides students flexibility to tailor studies according to individual learning styles.
This includes UBD’s pioneering Discovery Year programs for students to learn on a global platform through partnerships with universities and institutions across six continents.
Since 1985, UBD has produced influential leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals.
Brunei’s state university is 298 in top 500 World University rankings , 34 among top 50 Under 50, and 100 in Asia University rankings.
