A grievous error on the part of a helicopter pilot was the cause of death of Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant and eight others in a fiery crash in Calabasas CA last January 2020.
Bryant was with his 13-year old daughter Gianna, basketball coach John Altobelli, wife Keri Altobelli, daughter Alyssa Altobelli, basketball coach Christina Mauser, Sarah Chester, Payton Chester and pilot Ara Zobayan during the tragic accident.
Authorities noted greyish skies when Zobayan – who was flying Bryant’s party to an exhibition event – became disoriented as he desperately tried to climb above the clouds before crashing.
They said, for some reason, he may have believed the helicopter, owned by charter service Island Express, was climbing when it was actually descending.
Also, they said that chartered flights aren’t supposed to fly in dense cloud conditions that would severely reduce visibility.
