Bad news for hog and poultry raisers: your days are over!
Citing health concerns, the Quezon City Council has just passed a new law banning the operation of piggeries and chicken farms within city limits.
According to the City Veterinary Official, Dr. Ana Marie Cabel, the phase-out of hundreds of backyard pig and chicken farms is justified as they violate existing environmental and sanitation regulations.
Cabel said they also contribute hugely to the pollution of creeks and small waterways that flow into the river systems, and eventually into Manila Bay.
QC Mayor Joy Belmonte, however, assured affected residents they would be given access to easy financing to allow them alternative livelihood opportunities.
Under the present QC Zoning Ordinance, Ms. Belmonte said all pig and poultry businesses are considered illegal as there are no agricultural or rural zones that permit their continued existence.
City Ordinance 2990-2020 which outlawed these piggery and poultry farms was authored by Councilors Franz Pumaren, Eric Medina and Lala Sotto.
