PH climbs world’s list of most Covid infections

Republika

The Philippines is currently 27th in world rankings for Covid19 figures, with a national caseload of 953,106 as of April 19.

In mid-March, a whole year after the start of the world’s longest lockdown, the country has experienced an unprecedented surge in cases that has sent hospitals and healthcare communities reeling. Weekly figures from the period of March 4 to 10 had even exceeded the highest number of cases last year which occurred from August 6 to 12.

Data experts have said that if the coronavirus’ current trend continues, the Philippines may hit one million Covid19 cases by the end of the month.

In a bid to curb the rapid spread of the virus, a two-week-long enhanced community quarantine was imposed on the National Capital Region Plus bubble, which encompasses Metro Manila as well as four adjacent provinces: Laguna, Rizal, Cavite and Bulacan.

This second wave has been attributed to new variants but the health department has also placed blame on citizens who have tired of wearing face masks and face shields and following other standard protocols.

On the other end of the spectrum, the administration has also been blamed for a pandemic response that has been found wanting. The nation’s vaccine rollout also began later than its Southeast Asian neighbors.

The Philippines has the worst Covid19 outbreak second only to Indonesia, although the country’s number of infections has reached almost double that of Indonesia’s since the beginning of March.
