Pacquiao files P100M libel case vs pastor

Republika

Senator Manny Pacquiao is suing Mindanao-based religious leader Apollo Quiboloy for P100 million for allegedly spreading “fake news” regarding the supposed misuse of public funds for a P3.5-billion sports arena in Sarangani province.

In a cyber-libel complaint filed last week before the Makati City Prosecutor’s Office, boxing icon Pacquiao accused Quiboloy, a close friend of President Duterte, of “spreading fake news and false information” on his TV station as well as on social media about the unfinished Sarangani Sports Training Center project which was started some years ago when he (Pacquiao) was still a congressman there.

Pacquiao said these falsehoods have “blackened” his image and reputation as an “honest” public servant which he had done his best to uphold.

A lawyer for Quiboloy, however, shrugged off Pacquiao’s libel case as politically-motivated in furtherance of his projected bid for the Philippine presidency in the 2022 elections.

In recent weeks, Pacquiao had become highly-critical of President Duterte, speaking out against alleged massive corruption in government, especially after being ousted as the PDP-Laban party president by the faction led by Energy Secretary Al Cusi.
