Senator Manny Pacquiao last week hit back against religious leader Apollo Quiboloy amid the latter’s claims that the lawmaker’s sports center pet project in his hometown of Sarangani would cost P3.5 billion.
“Hindi ko alam bakit nangangaral ka ng salita ng Panginoon tapos ganyan ka?” he said. “Hindi ganyan si Jesus Christ.”
Pacquiao asserted that Quiboloy’s people fabricated the news, taking photos of a building that was erected in 1996 and not the new construction. He further clarified that the estimated cost of the project was not in the billions as Quiboloy said, but somewhere between P350- to P450 million.
“Ang pinaka-maximum na, P500 million,” he said. “‘Yun yung training center ng Sarangani, yung may batas. Hindi P3.5 [billion ang budget].”
In March two years ago, President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law Republic Act 11224, which okayed the construction of a state-of-the-art sports training facility in the province of Sarangani.
Pacquiao, also the chair of the Senate committee on sports, filed Senate Bill 1712 prior to this, which sought the center’s creation. According to the champion boxer, there currently exists no indoor sports facility where athletes could train throughout the year, particularly during bad weather.
