1996 Atlanta Olympics silver medalist Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco is to receive P500,000 from the Office of the President as “pa-consuelo” for all the rewards that were promised him, but didn’t receive.
Velasco, who competed in the light-flyweight division, was the sole medal winner for the 12-man Philippine delegation.
After seeing 2020 Tokyo Olympics medal winners Hidilyn Diaz, Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam and Eumir Marcial being showered with tens of millions of pesos in financial incentives and gifts for their stellar efforts in bringing honor to the country, took to social media recently to air his heartaches.
After 25 years, Velasco said he still has to receive the P2.5 million cash gift promised him by the House of Representatives then led by Speaker Joe de Venecia.
Velasco said also that an unnamed businessman vowed to give him a lifetime allowance of P10,000 monthly, but which lasted for only one year.
He said the Philippine Navy (PN), where he was a serviceman, had pledged scholarships for his two children, but failed to deliver.
Velasco said that he received a house and lot as part of his incentives, but until today the title to the property has not yet been delivered to him.
“Sana yung titulo ma-transfer na kasi nakatira ako doon, at mamaya bigla akong palayasin.”
