An elderly man in Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental on Friday, Nov. 6 shot dead his wife when he mistook her for a thief inside their house.
Police withheld the names of the 80-year old man and the 76-year-old victim.
Probers said the couple was fast asleep at around 11 p.m. when the suspect was awakened by the sound of barking dogs.
To secure the safety of his wife, the suspect first felt around his wife and thought he had her beside him without knowing that it was just a pillow that was covered with a blanket.
The husband saw someone lurking inside their house, but could not identify the “intruder” as it was dark. Sensing danger from an unidentified man, he allegedly shot at the person.
But when he turned on the lights, he saw his wife lying on the floor with a gunshot wound in the head.
The victim was brought to the hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Probers said the suspect reportedly threw the gun and fled.
The family of the victim, however, has no plan to file a criminal case against the suspect.
