OCTA: NCR possibly Covid19 ‘low-risk’ by October’s end

Republika

OCTA Research Group has said that it is possible for the National Capital Region to fall under the ‘low risk’ classification by the end of this month.

According to OCTA Research Fellow Dr. Guido David, Ph.D., virus cases have peaked, currently tallying a 7-day average of around 2,000.

“By the end of October, it is quite possible that the NCR will be classified as low risk based on our criteria,” David said in Tagalog during an interview with ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo.

He added that at the moment, no variant of concern that could enter the Philippines is in sight. Given that data, it’s very possible for the trend to continue throughout the Christmas holidays.

Metro Manila’s hospital occupancy is expected to lower considerably given the number of people infected by a single virus patient. At the moment, the reproductive number of Covid19 stands at 0.6 while the positivity rate is at 13%.

The Department of Health (DOH) as a whole has seen a decline in renewed infections within the capital region. Currently, the count of residents as a whole is at around 13.5 million people. That alone counts towards about one-third of the Philippines’ gross domestic product.

In that same interview, Guido predicted that the national average would go down to a 4-digit tally. This is based on the 7-day nationwide average currently playing around the 11,000 range. Daily virus cases have been at less than 10,000 recently for the Philippines, which is a sigh of relief from the days of the average breaking 20,000 in a single day.

Herd immunity is likely the cause for the cases declining considerably, Guido shared. Officials have already previously stated that at least half of the eligible population of Metro Manila has already been fully vaccinated against Covid19.

Despite Metro Manila’s downward trend, the DOH has observed a Covid19 case increase in a number of areas such as Mimaropa, the Bicol Region, and Zamboanga Peninsula.
