Nograles acting Palace spox; Midas to SC

Republika

President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles has been appointed as his acting spokesman. This is on the heels of Harry Roque quitting the post in order to run for senator next year.

Nograles is also spokesperson of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF), which he sits as co-chair for.

Another notable appointment as of late has been Court administrator Jose Midas Marquez, who is now an associate justice of the Supreme Court. He’s the 192nd associate justice of the high court, succeeding retiree Edgardo delos Santos.

55-year-old Marquez has been gunning for the associate justice position since 2017. He’d made it to the shortlist of both the Judicial and Bar Council.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, the president’s daughter, previously opposed Marquez’s bid for the associate justice post. She filed the motion in 2018 after the allegedly tried to manipulate the withdrawal of a disbarment case against her.

The disbarment case he had tried to get her off the hook from involved a 2011 incident where Duterte-Carpio had punched a sheriff.

Marquez took his oath earlier this month, SC spokesman Brian Keith Hosaka told press.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea sent a letter informing Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo of the appointment last Sept. 27. The appointment paper of Marquez was also dated Sept. 27, which has since been signed by President Duterte.
