The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been ordered by Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to investigate the growing list of sabungeros (cockfight enthusiasts) that are missing or have allegedly been abducted.
Authorities say that over the recent weeks, over two dozen sabungeros from all over Luzon-including the National Capital Region, Bulacan and Laguna-were reported to either be abducted or lost.
All cases are also being investigated by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The Justice department order that Guevarra issued gives the NBI further authorization to file charges against people found responsible for unlawful acts related to the sudden disappearances.
Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa told reporters that he intends to call for a Senate probe as well. He currently sits as chair of the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs.
As of press time, the total number of those who have disappeared are at over two dozen.
“Given the urgency of the issue while the Senate is on regular adjournment, I am planning to conduct an inquiry,” dela Rosa said, “as part of my committee’s oversight function over certain government agencies.”
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has also since launched their own investigation.
