A parcel inspected by the Bureau of Customs turned up 119 live tarantulas at the Ninoy International Airport (NAIA), just last week.
Shipped by a certain “Michal Krolicki”, the package originated from Poland to a consignee in General Trias, Cavite. Declared as “buty”—Polish, for shoes—the parcel images looked suspicious to airport staff and were subsequently taken for physical examination.
Different species of live tarantulas kept in individual plastic vials were found and were immediately surrendered to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit.
The customs unit at NAIA has been intercepting illegal wildlife trade in recent months.
