World No. 2 tennis player Rafael Nadal has inadvertently rubbed some coarse salt into the eyes of clueless officials of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in his praise of teenage junior tennis sensation Alex Eala.
Nadal, who recently won his 13th French Open title, lauded the 15-year old Filipina for her exploits in the same tournament where she ended up in the semi-finals of the girls’ junior category in Roland Garros and climbed to Number 2 in the world rankings.
“Very happy for you and keep up the hard work and great results,” Nadal posted.
Netizens said most obviously the PSC didn’t share Nadal’s elation over Eala’s stellar achievements on the world stage because they had never cared to support her financially and otherwise.
In her Facebook post, Eala’s mother Rizza Maniego slammed the PSC for falsely claiming they had advanced some P4.5 million for her training expenses leading up the French Open.
“There was and is no support from the PSC,” Maniego said.
She alleged further that she and her husband were given the run around at the PSC when they were trying to get reimbursement for Alex’s expenses as far back as last January.
