President Duterte is amenable to murder raps being filed against Covid spreaders
If the government were to have its way, Covid19 spreaders – or those who are fully aware they are infected with Covid19 and yet insist on wandering about to the detriment of others – could be charged with “murder.”
In a taped meeting in Malacanang last week, presidential chief legal counsel Salvador Panelo raised the possibility of filing murder charges against such individuals, to which Mr. Duterte agreed.
Panelo posited if a person knows fully well he has Covid19 and still goes about mingling in public as if nothing is wrong and gets to infect another which results in this person’s death, then “this falls within the ambit of murder” because it is intentional.
But Duterte countered that the most suitable charge would be reckless imprudence, although he agreed that a murder charge is possible for intentional Covid spreaders.
“Iyang reckless imprudence mas swak doon sa sitwasyon,” he said.
The chief executive disclosed he is asking his legal advisers to find a suitable law with which to charge hard-headed quarantine violators that would land them in jail, in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.
He also warned of jail time for persons who join mass gatherings.
