Due to flooding in Agusan del Sur and other parts of Mindanao caused by Tropical Depression “Vicky,” the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) has called on Congress to rehabilitate eight river basins in the island.
‘Vicky’ recently released high volume of rains that rampaged the agricultural lands of the said areas causing the devastation of its agricultural crops and veggies.
Minda chair Emmanuel Piñol cited the bill creating the Mindanao River Basins Rehabilitation and Development Authority (MRBRDA) House Bill 1390 authored by North Cotabato Rep. Joselito Sacdalan 10 years ago.
The bill proposed the creation of MRBRDA to ensure its rehabilitation, protection and development of major rivers in Mindanao hosting the country’s second-largest river system.
“The urgency of the measure is once again highlighted by the floods which hit the Agusan and Davao river basins this week,” said Piñol.
Reports said that Mindanao is endowed with rich ecosystems and fertile river basins but its watersheds are threatened by extractive industries like logging and mining.
Piñol said the Mindanao 2020 report showed that watershed degradation, if not addressed, would give rise to food security threats and hamper economic development.
