Cebu City Mayor Edgardo “Edgar” Labella passed away on the morning of November 19. He was 70 years old. Prior to his death, he had been hospitalized at least six times in the last year alone.
In an interview with Teleradyo, Vice Mayor Michael Rama confirmed the news. “He died this morning, somewhere between 3:20AM and 4AM.”
Rama had been the acting mayor since Labella took indefinite leave due to medical issues last October 8.
At a press conference, Labella’s son Jaypee stated that the cause of death was “septic shock secondary to pneumonia.”
Labella had already been confined at the hospital for a little over three weeks by then due to pneumonia.
It was not his first battle with the disease: Labella took at least six leaves of absence within the span of a year. All of them were bouts with pneumonia.
