Massive data breach hits S&R

Republika

S&R Membership Shopping was hit by a data breach that compromised customer data in the thousands last Nov. 14. However, the public was only informed through an advisory over a week after.

The advisory read, in part: “We would like to inform you that S&R recently became the target of a cyber-attack. Our team acted immediately and decisively to implement our cybersecurity protocols that enabled us to resume our system operations”.

Put simply, a data breach exposes information that is otherwise confidential, protected or sensitive to unauthorized parties. The most common type are scammers that then take this stolen data and use it for illegal cybercrime.

The upscale retailer initially had four warehouses in Alabang, ASEANA, BGC and Congressional when they opened in 2006. Its name stands for Sol and Robert Price, who founded the Price Club.

Over the years, it has become a preferred upscale retailer that attracts middle to high-end clientele. This is what makes the data breach particularly precarious.

The National Privacy Commission, roughly 22,000 S&R customers were affected. They had been notified privately on Nov. 15, or about 24 hours after. No other information was provided to the media.

Viral Facebook posts by convicted scammer and social media influencer Christian “Xian” Gaza actually filled the gaps. Gaza had been found guilty of violating the Bouncing Check Law in 2018 and had been sentenced to five years in jail.

According to Gaza, a “ransomware” hacker group had allegedly attempted blackmail worth millions and millions of dollars against S&R.
