Mandatory vaccination sought

Republika

A lawmaker is seeking “mandatory vaccination” for all Filipinos against Covid19 as response to the current pandemic, and future ones.

Cavite Representative Elpidio “Pidi” Barzaga has filed House Bill No. 9252 which would require citizens to get vaccinated for free at any government hospital or health center.

But this will take some doing as Barzaga isn’t aligned with the group of Speaker Lord Alan Velasco that is currently in charge of things in the House of Representatives. He is a known ally of former Speaker Allan Peter Cayetano.

Barzaga’s radical proposal was immediately shot down by Health department spokesperson Dr. Ma. Rosario Vergeire who said vaccination should be purely voluntary.

Vergeire said this is in line with the position of the World Health Organization (WHO) which maintains that people shouldn’t be forced to get inoculated.

“It is the right of a person to decide if they will receive or not receive the vaccine” she was quoted in reports as saying.

According to the polling outfit Social Weather Stations, in a January survey, only around 47 percent of respondents said they are willing to be vaccinated even if the doses are readily available.
