Malian woman has rare nonuplets

Republika

A 25-year-old Malian woman, Halima Cisse, has given birth to nine live babies–five girls and four boys–at once, after expecting only seven.

This extraordinary birth of nearly ten babies merited the attention of the Guinness World Records, who is verifying the birth. It’s current title holder, American Nadya Suleman, gave birth to eight premature babies at once in 2009.

Cisse gave birth in Morocco as directed by the Malian government since the country, one of the poorest in the world, did not have adequate equipment in their hospitals to facilitate the births.

Having given birth prematurely at 30 weeks, Cisse is reported to be in stable condition following heavy bleeding which necessitated she undergo a blood transfusion.

Director of the Casablanca clinic, Youssef Alaoui, said that to his knowledge, Cisse did not take any fertility treatments to aid this multiple pregnancy.
