The Makati City government is eyeing to procure “premium” vaccines such as Pfizer, Janssen or AstraZeneca for its 450,000 bonafide residents.
Mayor Abby Binay said that P1 billion has been set aside for the purchase of these vaccines which her constituents have shown a preference for.
“We had a survey, and what they indicated is Pfizer, AstraZeneca or Janssen,” she reasoned.
The Makati LGU’s thrust is aligned with the desire of billionaires Tessie Sy-Coson, Joey Concepcion, Fernando Zobel and others in the private sector to purchase AstraZeneca doses for their employees to avoid the delays and red tape usually associated with the government.
But Binay said she really has no problem if the national government provides them with Chinese vaccines such as Sinovac or Sinopharm, because ultimately it will be the public who chooses.
“We will ask around who wants to be inoculated with the Chinese vaccines,” she said. “Mayroon silang freedom of choice.”
For those who decline, Binay said they will have to wait for the vaccine brands being targeted by City Hall, which they think is best for them.
