Sen. Richard Gordon, chairman of the Blue Ribbon committee, is demanding the resignation of all top officials of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for alleged gross incompetence.
The specific reason cited by Gordon is their continued failure to release 13 million duly paid license plates to their owners since 2013.
(The LTO is an agency under the aegis of the Department of Transportation led by Secretary Art Tugade. And before him, Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, during the time of President Benigno Aquino III.)
During a Senate hearing last week on the implementation of the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act, Gordon claimed the huge volume of riding-in-tandem killings during these past few years can be attributed to this inaction by the LTO.
“Enough is enough. We can no longer tolerate a situation where nothing is happening except people being killed,” he was quoted as saying.
It was noted that from the period 2010-2020 the Philippine National Police (PNP) had recorded over 36,000 motorcycle-related crimes, a big number of which were brazen broad daylight killings.
“The LTO is incompetent. It has no compassion. Wala kayong ginagawa. You have apathy. You do not care about people being killed,” Gordon railed.
To counter, an LTO official said they were in the process of printing the license plates, but had to stop due to a new law mandating another size.
