The House of Representatives will not rush to hear the impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen due to “other more important issues.”
Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez, vice chairman of the Justice committee which will handle the case filed by Edwin cordevilla of the Filipino League of Advocates for Good government, said this will have to wait until next year.
Rodriguez said several priority bills such as the appropriations bill, the proposed Bayanihan 3 bill, as well as other measures dealing with the pandemic, calamity response and economic recovery program have to be discussed at length.
“We cannot rush this because we are talking here of a member of the highest court of the land,” he explained.
At the same time, Rodriguez stressed that the House would not be railroaded into a repeat of the impeachment case of Supreme court Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno who was removed by the SC by way of quo warranto in 2018.
He said that the Constitution is clear that impeachable officials like SC justices can only be removed by impeachment, which falls under the ambit of the House.
