The mayor of San Fernando City in La Union has been suspended for 90 days by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), following a ruling by the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan.
Reports said Mayor Hermenegildo Gualberto was found guilty of violating Republic Act 3019, or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, for realigning the city’s development fund to upgrade the public plaza.
Vice Mayor Pablo Ortega will replace Gualberto until he has served his suspension.
In April 2020, Gualberto was suspended for six months by the Ombudsman due to a complaint by several barangay captains for grave misconduct, grave abuse of authority, gross neglect of duty and malversation.
In September 2020, the Court of Appeals threw out a ruling by the Ombudsman dismissing Gualberto from office.
