Kuwait City – A Kuwaiti woman was sentenced to death for brutally killing her Filipino household helper last year.
Her husband, who tried to cover up the crime by not reporting it to the police, was meted a four-year prison term.
According to the Philippine embassy here, the Kuwaiti criminal court ordered the accused to be hanged for torturing to death Pinay domestic helper Jeanelyn Padernal Villavende.
Villavende died on Dec. 28, 2019 at the hands of her employer due to “acute heart failure and respiration as a result of shock and multiple injuries in the vascular nervous system.”
Philippine ambassador to Kuwait Mohamad Lomondot thanked the Kuwait government for the “fair ruling” in favor of Villavende.
Because of Villavende’s death, an irked President Duterte imposed a ban on the deployment of domestic workers, which was later lifted following consultations with the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs, the filing of appropriate charges against the Kuwaiti husband-and-wife and the implementation of a harmonized employment contract for Filipino OFWs.
