Veteran actor John Arcilla recently won the Coppi Volpi per il miglio attore (Volpi Cup for Best Actor) at the recently concluded 78th Venice Film Festival. He won for his role in “On The Job: The Missing 8.” The coveted award was received on Arcilla’s behalf by the film’s director, the acclaimed Erik Matti.

The ceremony happened in Venice, Italy on September 12, Sunday (or in Italian time, September 11, Saturday). Arcilla could not attend the awards ceremony in person due to filming commitments to a television show: FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano. In his acceptance speech posted on Instagram, the actor could not hide his sheer delight and gratitude.

“If there’s one thing I regret tonight … I will not be able to see my picture there, kissing my own Volpi Cup,” the actor said. “I promised myself that as soon as the climate will be more…friendlier, I will fly at once to Venice.

Wear my tux. Bring this Volpi of mine, go straight there to where this venue is … and kiss my own Volpi.”

The caption accompanying the uploaded video read, in part: “I thank the 78Venice International Film Festival. I can’t find the right word about how I feel today! This VOLPI CUP is such a symbol of a milestone in my work as an actor. It fills my cup of life full of blessings.”

“On The Job: Missing 8”, also known as “On The Job 2”, is a crime thriller film. Written by Michiko Yamamoto, it is the sequel to the 2013 film “On The Job.” Arcilla played the role of Sisoy Salas, a corrupt journalist who had to investigate his colleagues’ sudden disappearances.

Matti uploaded a congratulatory message to Arcilla on his Instagram, accompanied by a photo of the latter’s winning trophy. “Now, how do I bring this home, @johnarcilla ? It’s one heavy piece of cup!

Congratulations!!! You deserve it! #OnTheJob #TheMissing8 tinalo niya si Pareng Benedict and Oscar!”

This year’s jury for the Venice Film Festival was led by Academy Award-winning director Bong Joon-ho and included the likes of Broadway star Cynthia Erivo as well as Oscar winner and “Nomadland” director Chloe Zao.

Arcilla is the first Filipino actor to win the award, which was previously won by actors such as Adam Driver, Colin Firth, and Javier Bardem.
