The Philippines is probably the only nation in the world with a face shield mandate as part of its Covid19 health protocols.
Citing this queer fact, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno has asked the National Covid19 Task Force (IATF) to look into the possibility of revoking the face shield requirement for persons venturing out in public.
“Tayo na lang yata sa buong mundo and nag-re-require sa general population at gamitin na lang sa ospital, upang makabawas sa gastusin at intindihin ng taumbayan,” he said in a statement.
Moreno said he has also brought up the idea to his peers in the Metro Manila Council as this is one way of spurring business activity to hasten national economic recovery.
Moreno told City Hall reporters it is high time that the face shield policy is revisited by concerned authorities as this is one way of spurring business activity.
“Yung mawawalan ka ng isang sagabal sa pagkilos sa kalsada o sa labas ng bahay ay malaking bagay para maibalik natin ang normalcy sa lipunan,” he explained.
However, Paranaque Mayor Edwin Olivares was not too optimistic about his colleague’s controversial proposal as the scientific data seems not to support it.
“All the mayors are not doctors, so we have to rely on the experts to show us the way forward,” he said.
Dr. Rabindre Abeyasinghe, World Health Organization (WHO) representative in the Philippines, also appeared unsupportive of eliminating the face mask mandate at the moment owing to the spread of more transmissible Covid variants.
“The Philippine cannot let its guard down,” he said, adding that face shield offer to the public another layer of protection against Covid infection which is not all that bad.
