Indonesia is importing oxygen from city-state Singapore and is asking for help from other neighbor countries including China, following a hit by more infectious Covid19 Delta strain.
Despite being supplied 10,000 concentrators (oxygen generators) by Singapore, senior minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said they will source oxygen from other countries should their supply still be insufficient.
All oxygen supplies are ordered to be sent to a number of hospitals in a race to avoid the “worst-case scenario” in which daily infections may reach up to 50,000. Hospitals in Indonesia’s second-largest city, Surabaya, are already full up and unable to admit more patients.
Following this deadly surge, restrictions were placed anew in the country’s capital Jakarta as well as tourist destination island, Bali.
The country’s caseload now stands at some 2.3 million cases with over 61,000 fatalities.
Authorities plan to accelerate their inoculation drive, aiming to vaccinate over 180 million of their 270 million population by early next year.
However, only 5% of this total figure have been fully jabbed.
