Indian bride suddenly dies at wedding; sister substituted by the family

Republika

Weddings are usually one of the most beautiful times in a woman’s life. For a bride in India, identified only as Surbhi, it was deadly: she had a heart attack after a Hindu wedding tradition with Manjesh Kumar, her groom. While a local village doctor was called, she could not be saved.

The families did not end the ceremonies despite the incident. Instead, both parties found their relatives making a new arrangement on the spot. They decided that the bride’s sister, Nisha, take the bride’s place instead. As festivities went on, the body of Surbhi was moved to another room. The deceased would-have-been bride was then cremated later on.

Relatives of the bride have shared that it was a rather tough decision to make. It came about after both families gathered together immediately after the tragedy. Exactly who suggested Nisha to replace her sister is unknown.

Factors that influenced the decision are likely rooted in tradition. On the groom’s end, it would have been avoiding the stigma of having no bride as they returned from a wedding. For the bride’s family, the expected dowry was likely a factor. There was also a rather emotionally-charged appeal by Guddi Devi, the bride’s mother, who wanted the wedding to push on.

Guarav, a son of Guddi Devi, is now the one taking care of her. According to him, she is going through a lot of pain. As Surbhi was the eldest daughter, there were a lot of dreams pinned on her. Their mother still calls for her every day.
