Iloilo City pedals to the top of 2021 Mobility Awards

Republika

This year’s Mobility Awards marked the first instance wherein the prestigious event encompassed the entire nation rather than just Metro Manila, and it was Iloilo City that bagged both the Gold Award of its region and the overall distinction of being the country’s best bike-friendly city.

Launched just last year, the Mobility Awards endeavors to highlight leadership and innovation from different sectors, in promoting cycling as a sustainable mode of active transportation among their constituents.

Groups such as MNL Moves, the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities, The Climate Reality Project Philippines, Pinay Bike Commuter Community, and 350.org Philippines, have banded together to organize the Mobility Awards on an annual basis, originally just among Metro Manila cities.

League of Cities of the Philippines Executive Director Veronica Hitosis announced this year’s top city, which Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said was a “great honor” for him and his constituents.

Iloilo City boasts an 11-kilometer bike lane network that goes throughout the districts of Jaro, Molo, Mandurriao, as well as 4 kilometers of a protected lane at Benigno Aquino Avenue within the city proper.

Treñas stated that the city’s already impressive bike lanes are slated to enhance further into a maximum of 32 kilometers, in the future.

“With our desire for a sustainable city, we provided an alternative mode of transportation that aims to lessen carbon footprints as our response to the rising impacts of climate change,” the proud mayor explained.

29 other contenders for the top spot came behind Iloilo City, and among the runners-up per region were Naga City in Luzon, Mandaue City in Visayas, and Davao City in Mindanao.
