The Department of Environment and Natural Resources ordered the stoppage of 123 illegal structures in the Upper Marikina River Basic Protected Landscape.
They issued 80 show-cause orders and 43 cease-and-desist orders against illegal occupants such as piggery operators, resorts, camps, retreat centers as well as private homeowners, including those built over easements.
Violators are slapped with P5 million in fines and jail time for up to 12 years.
The Upper Marikina watershed was a protected landscape under Presidential Proclamation No. 296, late last 2011. Yet, illegal structures have hounded the area. These included quarrying and logging operations which resulted in in deforestation and environmental destruction.
Last July 24, two forest rangers were shot in the Masungi Georeserve Foundation site by unidentified gunmen. This spurred on calls for more security for forest workers in the Upper Marikina reserve.
