The House of Representatives is poised to formally take up the impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen.
This comes after Speaker Lord Alan Velasco last week endorsed the petition, filed by anti-corruption watchdog Filipino League of Advocates for Good Governance in December 2020, to the powerful Rules committee headed by Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez (first cousin of former Sen. Bongbong Marcos).
House sources said the Rules committee has three session days to act on the complaint, or dismiss it totally – which should happen in May when sessions resume.
Leonen was accused of failing to file his statement of assets, liabilities and networth (SALN) for 15 years and delaying the resolution of cases pending before his sala.
Quite significantly, Leonen had penned the high court’s decision (concluding 4 years of litigation) to dismiss the election protest of defeated candidate Bongbong Marcos against incumbent Vice President Leni Robredo.
