The Hong Kong government has issued an order banning all flights from the Philippines for a period of two weeks, starting April 20, over valid Covid19 concerns.
Apart from the Philippines, flights from India and Pakistan were also suspended for the same time span.
Reports said HK officials had become alarmed with the virus running rampant in Metro Manila and elsewhere, with daily infections averaging 11,000 cases for the past month.
The Philippines is currently ranked at the bottom among Southeast Asian nations in terms of Covid statistics, with about 16,000 fatalities and over 800,000 infections. In contrast, Hong Kong has only 209 deaths and some 12,000 confirmed cases.
Carriers impacted by the flight ban include Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines and Cebu Pacific.
