Jan Catherine Sy, the granddaughter of late retail magnate Henry Sy, died last Mar. 18 at 29 years old. She was the eldest of the three children of Henry Sy Jr., SM Prime Holdings chairman.
On the Facebook page of Cup of Faith under the Christ’s Commission Fellowship of which the Sys are members, they released a statement: “Dear Family and Friends, tonight, March 18, 2021 at 6:35 pm, our dearest daughter Jan Catherine Sy is now with the Lord Jesus already. Blessed be the name of the LORD. You give and take away. My heart will choose to say, Lord, BLESSED BE YOUR NAME!”
Jan reportedly died of sepsis, a complication of leptospirosis, the infection that she is suspected to have contracted.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection most common in tropical countries where floods occur. Its main vector is rat’s urine and waste and can enter through open wounds, no matter how small.
Jan served as assistant vice president and project director of SM Development Corporation (SMDC), the conglomerate’s residential development arm. She initiated its community development program, The Good Guys, in 2019.
She was a noted equestrienne and even participated in international events.
Jan was also supposed to get married next month.
